For artists in Naples, a desire to return to the past may be the best future. It has certainly helped to establish a very special — and very successful — type of art [...] The cynic in me wants to declare “Little House on the Prairie: The Musical” a load of sentimental tripe. I won’t, because there’s a solid night of theater in there – somewhere – if you’ve got the patience to muddle through it. “Little House” trades on the remembered glee of literate kids who snuggled up to read “The Long Winter” during the cold days of their childhood, imagined themselves cheering Almanzo during the Fourth of July horse race or festered with anger at Nellie Oleson’s antics. [...] The Board of Directors of the Art League Marco Island’s Center for the Arts announced the resignation of Executive Director Christine Neal on Tuesday. [...] A proposed requirement for developers to pay a fee for public art went from being on the table to being indefinitely tabled at a meeting held on Tuesday [...] David Merrick was a monster, nicknamed the “abominable showman.” Actor David Garrison tames him in TheatreZone’s world premiere of “The Beast of Broadway,” a saucy, snarky, intimate and deliciously dishy night of stage gossip that peeks into Merrick’s career as a kingpin of the Great White [...] A lot of people put in an amazing amount of hard work to bring “Fiddler to the Roof” to the stage of Sugden Community Theatre. Every bit of that work – and excitement from the cast, crew and audience showed on opening night. Despite the well-deserved standing ovation, I wish the Naples Players had a few extra weeks to work on the [...] Following mixed reviews by City Council in February, the City of Marco Island Arts Advisory Committee is meeting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday in the first floor conference room of City Hall, 50 Bald Eagle Dr., to discuss potential revisions to a proposed public arts ordinance. [...] Twelve years ago, Chuck Daye and his wife Judy played their first parts in “The Wizard of Oz” for the Marco Players. A little more than a year ago Chuck Daye played his last part in “A Bench in the [...] Henry Fonda has been hiding out on Marco Island all this time. Who knew? His name is Michael Hennessey and he growls at people for three hours during the Marco Players production of “On Golden Pond.” [...] Here’s the good news: I liked “Jersey Boys.” Here’s the bad news: “Jersey Boys” isn’t all its cracked up to be. It might be the greatest jukebox musical of all time – but it is still just an iTunes playlist fronted by some talented singers and world-class production values. The show goes to the record bin time and again for a soundtrack of 50s and 60s hits that keeps the crowd screaming, whooping, hollering in paroxysms of orgiastic delight each time another favorite rings out. [...] Here’s the good news: I liked “Jersey Boys.” Here’s the bad news: “Jersey Boys” isn’t all its cracked up to be. The show goes to the record bin time and again for a soundtrack of 50s and 60s hits that keeps the crowd screaming, whooping, hollering in paroxysms of orgiastic delight each time another favorite rings out. [...] Gulfshore Playhouse’s “Beau Jest” schleps through the fields of Yiddish humor with practiced shtick – kvelling parents on one hand, kvetching daughter on the other and a megillah of a plot. Good thing you don’t have to be Jewish to get the jokes. Even better that its [...] Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre’s production of “The King and I” proves that ageless Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes can – like a Timex – take a licking and keep on ticking. The show leans on gorgeous scenery, every bit of Yul Brynner’s built-up goodwill and “Getting to Know You” cuteness to produce a passable [...] You’ve all been through it: the boyfriend — or girlfriend — who simply didn’t fit your parents’ wish list. Maybe they’d quietly cross their fingers that your ardor would cool, but if they fit the mold of most parents, you were going to hear about all his-her [...] At 26 “People” magazine proclaimed him the youngest conductor on the Great White Way. And that’s only a small part of Jack Everly’s resumé. After frequent appearances as a guest pops conductor for the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, he is now their principal pops [...] There’s something you don’t know about stamp collecting. Or, more correctly, there are probably several somethings you don’t know about stamp collecting. But to return to that first insight: Stamp collecting isn’t the easygoing, innocuous avocation you imagine. Instead, it’s a darkly comedic high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse, complete with violence and [...] Horrendous noise pours out over the stage time and time again during Theatre Conspiracy’s latest show. Someone can’t sing. Not only can’t she sing – the sound she produces might charitably be described as two cats engaged in a mating ritual while being backed by a garbage disposal. This is “Glorious!” the mostly true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, “the first lady of the sliding scale,” later described as the worst singer in the [...] Florida Rep’s “You Can’t Take It With You” rambles along for three hours, introducing kittens, explosives, Russian royalty, federal agents, ballet dancers and a drunken actress. All this, in service of a simple, timeless message: “Stop and smell the roses.” Why bother stopping though, when laughter flows like wine inside the [...] Rudyard Kipling wrote that “the female of the species must be deadlier than the male.” One suspects that he had just finished a viewing of Thomas Middleton’s “Women Beware Women” before scribbling that. Strap on your petticoats, lace up your corsets and button your shoes – this is the 17th-century version of “Girls Gone [...] People have long been captivated by Florida’s beauty and abundance of plants and animal life as well as the unique diversity of their natural habitats. Marco’s contest will express a visual celebration of all natural species, both animal and plant life, which inhabit the Southwest Florida and Everglades’ environments. [...] |
