Mom ‘n pop hardware stores battle specter of ‘big box’ Lowes in East Naples
Local “mom & pop” hardware stores faced with the specter of a Lowe’s home improvement store going up in East Naples plan to keep prices low to compete. The “big box” chain is scheduled to open at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Collier Boulevard toward the end of the year. The building is under construction.

Everglades-area eco-tour operators dread effects of oil spill on environment, business
Eco-tour guide Capt. Jason Sine managed to hold off his exasperation until he and his group had reached the shell-strewn beach of Pavilion Key, one of the Ten Thousand Islands situated deep in the Everglades National Park. Sine had drawn a map in the sand explaining the machinations of the now-infamous Gulf Loop Current, and how it could literally suck in and steer the BP oil leak right toward Southwest Florida, and indeed the park.

Like many of the thousands of people who flocked to Sunday’s Taste of Collier gourmet festival at Bayfront Naples, Steve and Kathy Thomson had their route mapped out. “We’re going to eat until we get to the other side,” Steve Thomson said with a chuckle, adding that the couple’s budget limit for the afternoon would be “until we’re full.”
